Mongol Rally 2010
The world is just a little bit too safe. Gone are the days where the edge of the map called you forth to discover what lay beyond - satellite maps and GPS have it laid out before you leave the armchair. What if you want things to go wrong? What if you want a bit of unknown in a world full health and safety measures? What if the words "adventure travel" conjure images of old ladies on a guided tour to Everest base camp with all the danger and real adventure neatly removed?
So, with no back up crew or help of any kind we will be driving a 1999 Suzuki Jimny to Mongolia from London. Its gargantuan engine (1298cc) is capable of massive speeds of up to 60mph (100kph) on a good road, downhill. The carefully selected team of Gareth, Andrew, Danny and Hooper have been specifically chosen for the lack of mechanical know-how and love of adventure.
Now, the Mongol Rally isn't just about adventure, it's also about raising huge sacks of cash for charity. We have chosen to raise money for the Christina Noble Children's Foundation which will help those kids who didn't get the breaks in life that most kids do, so please give generously while we lay our lives (yes, lives!) on the line for this adventure to help those people less fortunate than us.
A third of the way around the earth, from London to Mongolia via a plethora of countries most people haven't heard of in a car that has an engine suitable for nipping to the shops. Starting from England, the rally finishes in the Mongolian capital Ulaan Baatar around five weeks later. It's about 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometres) depending on the route. The route we've chosen has changed a few times due to visa problems. Check out the route page for the current route which goes through 14 countries.
